A team of biologists led by Professor James Jones at the UK Department of Energy, University of Manchester has now studied how grasses and other native plants have changed in a region with just a single crop.

The findings appear online in Science on Wednesday.

Green grasses can survive for 20 years using their own roots as well as their neighbours. They will only grow up to 1,000 yards in some of the world's most densely wooded regions, scientists say.

Green grasses, commonly referred to as "green" plants because of the grassy-green and silky-green properties, are one of the leading sources of nitrogen, a greenhouse gas that can help keep CO2 in our atmosphere and which is in many cases as good as it gets.

While some studies have found that grasses (or algae) can grow in low light levels from trees, these studies were carried out over thousands of trees in the arid, grassy parts of Australia and New Guinea.

Green grasses grow in the same places as most other trees.

They may appear on some grasses (except those in grass fields) as their own or as a colony
