"The main problem is growing it and taking it to farmers in a way where there is some potential for it to affect crops and produce pest management. As a result of agriculture and soil quality deterioration, gnats have become a problem in some districts," says Neshab, who is also assistant director of IPCI-Bengalswad in Mumbai.
Neshab sees a positive impact when it comes to eradication of this pest and pest control. Some farmers want it eliminated and are happy the pests are eradicated once farmers can get around the issue. The problem is likely to return soon because of improvements in fertilizers, water conservation, crop residue management management and more."
The World Health Organization (WHO) says that between 2000 and 2014, there have been more than 16,700 cases of the fungus-like plant in India. The reason for this is unclear and it could just be that more control should be made. "We need to be aware that more controls are needed and how much more the population should be allowed to grow," says Neshab.
