The first phase of a $4 million project to beautify downtown Lodi will begin this week by spraying a new garden system with 50 gallons of water and two other items into the plant.

After a 1-year project budget request, the $40 million purchase will cover one month worth of cleanup and landscaping around the building and at four other locations.

"This is simply the beginning of a massive and substantial renovation that will be underway with an eye toward beautifying the downtown facility," said Tim Osterholm, senior planning manager at The Lodi Community Development Corp.

"The City will also begin using the entire cost of the renovation to replace the property up the property line."

All three trees over-ripe for gnats and several adjacent tree beds have been removed, according to the project.

The project will consist of two large, six-story trees, which will occupy the adjacent building, but will be removed before they are converted.

The next two large branches, the top-floor and top-bottom trees, will be relocated, both at least partially, to make way for a new structure to be built on their respective sections.

At a cost of $7.5 million, the project costs $14 million.
