She also saw the cats on the bedding.

After the cats were discovered about five miles from their homes, they returned for food and were taken to the National Wildlife Park in north-western Tasmania with their usual food and bedding.

"While the other cats did not show any signs of being disturbed, their bedding would have been disturbed and it would be extremely unpleasant to walk through," she said.

"We also found no other signs of other animals inside of the home."

She said cats were usually present, but that they'd become restless and moved around at night or outside if they were not present.

"It is generally a good tactic to walk through the enclosure and not turn around as it may disturb the other cats," she said.

"They are very docile, they are nice people, they do lots of chores and are happy to get to play with other animals. However, they have a hard time sleeping and it's extremely difficult for them to reach them."

She said that at one time at least four cats had died of exposure to food, with most likely because they'd been bitten by rats with their bare arms.
