indoor plants that are really hard to kill," says Dr. Eric Williams, who first discovered and documented the pest in 1965. "You didn't notice for a second that you had this bug on your hands or your skin, because this was part of an ecosystem and it could be as hard as you thought."

Dr. Williams believes there are hundreds of other plant species that carry the disease – some as many as 600,000 of which are now extinct. The pest has been on the African continent for nearly a century, he says, but not yet anywhere else.

"It's been under construction for 40 years now," he says. "It just seems like you have to understand that this comes from all over the world and it comes from every major continent in the world."

He adds, "If you think about it, if you want to avoid it, you're going to have to use more protective methods, and some of them have worked."

With these concerns, the U.K.-based Institute for Plant Protection and Regulation says it has started working with universities and universities around the country to identify ways to combat the insects.

In February, they launched a campaign called The International Bamboo Research Initiative (VBRI) with the goal of raising $400,000 by the end of the year to fund research that involved planting more and more and finding more and more species.
